Jo Hyeonsu’s Complete Landscape(2023)is composed of six flat works over two meters in length and width that are suspended from the ceiling in the middle of the exhibition space, allowing the viewer to see both inside and outside the paintings. The environment is designed to envelope the viewer, like the original forest from which the works originated. Temporality is also built into the work as the viewer can move around. Viewing is a process of unraveling the time and space that the artist has folded in. The paintings are not momentarily fixed objects, but sections of space that change with time. In a space surrounded by dark-tinted walls, the painted landscapes that glow in response to the light are different from the front to the back. The space<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that is half-open by draping several works of the same size has a realistic sense of nature. It faces nature,\u2028not civilization, which is just a combination of codes. Underlying this direction is a desire for the real. While some artists would layer paint on the canvas to depict the reality they want to hold onto, such as the bark of a tree or the surface of a rock, Jo takes the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the result of the artist’s long experimentation with how to represent the thickness of nature on a paper- thin surface. Physically, the veil is thin, but the layers that the artist has carved into it make the flat surface appear heavy. Nature is a truth hidden in layers, and\u2028art unravels them one by one. are hung in a dark space, their meaning is not clearly revealed at once, but gradually seeps in. There is a theatricality to works suspended in mid-air that is aimed at a full-body experience, not just a visual one. In “Art and Objecthood”, critic Michael Fried emphasizes the experience of stepping into the middle of a mis-en- scene that is characteristic of modern art, including minimalism. In order for the viewer to experience the forest as the artist experienced it, a picture on the wall was not enough. It is important to create a real situation, not a mere illusion of reality. In a work that emphasizes context, meaning is not limited to what the artist supposedly put into the work. The artwork, like nature, creates an experience of presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bodily experience over time makes ‘nature’ a mysterious object to be read again and again. The veil also takes on a variety of nuances in its relationship to light, which is omnipresent in nature. The thick layers of nature, which might have been heavily reproduced in a Westernized format, are drastically lightened by the use of eco-friendly materials such as Hanji. Surfaces with translucent areas allow light to pass through, capturing the forest landscape that can be seen from the front or back depending on the installation method. The screen is full of springtime energy due to the revitalization of all things, but the reverse side is a forest of bare trees. This is because the back (which is variable depending on the viewer’s position) is dominated by the thick trunks of the front landscape. It corresponds to the shadow of the opposite side. The shadow appears as another mode of representation, different from the model of a window or mirror. The shadow model has\u2028a stronger connection to the object than the window\u2028or mirror model, which became mainstream after the Renaissance. The dramatic effect of the same tree appearing in different seasons, a change perceived in a few steps, is due to the temporality inherent in the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living nature changes from moment to moment without ever being fixed. The sensitivity of the subject to recognize subtle changes is a condition of existence within the world. In philosophy, phenomenology is considered to be the most convincing description<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of this experience. This sensitivity, which is rarely heightened in everyday life, is at the heart of religious and artistic experiences. In “The Phenomenology of Perception”, the philosopher Merleau-Ponty says that to be is to be in the world and to be oriented toward the world. He goes beyond the subject\/object dichotomy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of traditional philosophy to emphasize the mutual insertion and entanglement between the beholder\u2028and the seen. Merleau-Ponty rejects the conventional notion that “truth dwells in the inner man”(Augustine). According to him, there is no inner man, man is in the world and it is within the world that he knows himself. For him, subjectivity is not an immobile self-identity. ‘To be subjective is to open to the other, to emerge from the self, is as essential to subjectivity as it is to time’.(Merleau-Ponty).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In “The Visible and the Invisible” Merleau-Ponty revisits the body as an object to understand how it can be a living link between nature and us. In this book,\u2028he argues that seeing is a participation in and a bond to what is seen. There is an underlying narcissism in all vision, he says, because the beholder is caught up in what he sees, and consequently what he sees is still himself. As many painters testify, I feel as if things are looking at me. As a result, my activeness is equally<\/p>\n\n\n\n

passive. The viewer and the seen are reversed, and it becomes impossible to know who is seeing and who is being seen. In Jo’s work, there is also a strange bond between the viewer and the seen. In “The Visible and the Invisible”, the body stands in front of the world, and the world stands in front of the body. And there is a relationship of embrace between the world and the body. And between these two perpendicular beings there is not a border, but a surface of contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artwork relate to these contact surfaces. A work that\u2028is full of nature is as static as nature itself. Nature has been considered static compared to history. The idea\u2028is that if history is a march of newness, nature has always been the same. Young artists of Jo’s age are always inclined toward novelty. Except for a few periods in history, nature was the object of conservatives’ admiration. As the faults of modernity are increasingly exposed, nature as an object of domination is returning. A pause only means that nature has a longer time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cycle. New is not always good, and old is not always bad. Nature only reveals her mysteries in glimpses to the gaze that is ready to receive her miracles. Children, scientists, and artists know that nature never stands still. Nature, which provided the artist with her first inspiration, has been translated into the language of art. Jo’s work urges a perception-like process when encountering nature. In this case, what is perceived<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is “a group of images that begin to reappear for no reason, and our perceptual field is composed of objects and the spaces between them” (Merleau-Ponty, The Phenomenology of Perception).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The natural comfort of paper is probably due to its origin in the forest. Jo’s work is the culmination of many attempts to convey the wonders she finds in nature through her artwork, and the experimentation\u2028is ongoing. There are many experimental samples in\u2028the studio. The paper is so thin that it flutters when\u2028the viewer passes by, but the image is made up of\u2028many layers. Hanji, which is qualitatively altered by wrinkling and oiling, allows multiple layers. The flat surface, which is almost cloth-like rather than paper, is the result of a long experimentation with the medium. The repeated layering, painting, and drawing of foreign materials is as much a product of making as it is of drawing. Without these efforts, it would have been difficult to transform what was drawn on a single sheet of paper into an installation. A Complete Landscape is based on a forest near a lake at the artist’s alma mater in her late 20s. Until recently, during a residency in Masan area, she had many opportunities to observe bamboo shoots and bamboo groves, and she made artworks about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the type of forest is different, the expression is similar. Jo’s work is not focused on accurate reproduction, but rather on the vivid impression of encountering nature. It is necessary to express it in a way that is different from the established methodologies of reproduction. Jo, who majored in Korean painting,\u2028has developed a sophisticated method of description\u2028to express the natural wonders she encounters. Describing natural reality is an ambition of art as well\u2028as phenomenology, as cited earlier. Phenomenology, a philosophy that seeks to delicately describe the world rather than reduce it to specific ideas, is philosophically rigorous, but it is also “a report of experienced space, time, and world, an attempt to describe our experience as it is, directly, without taking into account the psychological occurrences and causal explanations\u2028that scientists, historians, and sociologists can provide”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Merleau-Ponty). Here, nature is not limited to the object of the subject’s representation. What matters is the subject’s living interaction with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are not many such moments in everyday life. It’s a rare, blessed experience in a state of elevated mind and body. Of course the unusual object is important, but the subject must be ready. After such a dense<\/p>\n\n\n\n

time and space has passed, how much effort is made to recreate even a small part of it. The artist creates differences by repeatedly recreating the moment.\u2028In fact, there is nothing unusual about Jo’s subject matter. Nature is wonderful and there are many exotic landscapes, but the artist’s choice is just an ordinary hill in the neighbourhood. It is a place that has been visited repeatedly. It is in this repetition that difference becomes possible. The artist has experienced an<\/p>\n\n\n\n

event in this ordinary forest. I have endeavored to capture and record the dramatic moments of encounter (phenomenological moments in the sense introduced earlier) in which the world approaches me and I approach the world. Nature, which she embraced with the sensitivity of a young woman in her twenties, must have come to her more intimately because she was an artist. Only the one who tries to express can know the true value of what is expressed. There must be countless leaps from mere acceptance to creation. Art, like science, calls its process an experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forest in which the artist found solace is a kind of garden on campus, and the artwork shows a wildness that is more like a lushly branched forest than a well-groomed tree. Of course, there is fierce natural competition in and around it, but the forest seems to be at peace because it will be coordinated by nature. The artist sees a ‘a complete landscape’ in the grove, which would have been incomplete in the eyes of a gardener or developer of a French garden, who would have sought geometric balance. If nature feels complete, it’s because we came from nature. In “Foreign Bodies”, Alphonso Lingis phenomenologically describes his experience of coming face to face with a tree. “Through the movement of my eyes and the upright axis of my body, I sense<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and weigh the power and uplifting force of the tree’s water veins. I understand the uprightness of life implied by the giant trees, not through my mental capacity to produce concepts, but through the desire for uprightness inherent in my spine. It is my corporeal-image that takes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

shape as I gaze upon the sequoia.”\u2028He emphasizes that in French, ‘sense’ means both ‘meaning and direction’. The sense of the forest of\u2028the trees, or recognisability, is an ‘orientation that surfaces and foregrounds’ (Alphonso Lingis). Humans instinctively know that nature or its processes will benefit them. However, humans have always sought “autonomy” from nature, believing that reason would\u2028set them free. This view reached its peak in the modern era, when the Industrial Revolution and other advances in productive capacities led to a dramatic increase in productivity, but there have been so many disasters that we can no longer take it for granted. Nature needs to\u2028be rediscovered, and art can provide a new perspective. Rooted in the earth and reaching its branches to the sky, the tree is the materialised form of the strong support that connects the three worlds and the energy that flows through them. Trees have branches (roots) that extend underground as well as lush branches above ground. This marvellous creature, with its above-ground and underground connections, circulates water, nutrients, and air<\/p>\n\n\n\n

through all its organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jo’s work also suggests that trees are the embodiment of the flow of chi. The representation of trees on a surface made of wood, and the attention to form as an elution of content, is an attempt to place art on the level of nature. The artist seeks to translate the relationship between energy and matter, a fundamental law of nature, into<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the relationship between content and form in art. The lush branches are shaped by numerous strokes, and unspecifiable things such as the flow of energy are shaped by traces of various materials, especially the combination of disparate materials such as paper and metal. The artist explains, “In the past, I used to work\u2028a lot in welding and outdoor sculpture, and then I saw that the metals that were discarded outside were rusting naturally in the rain and wind, and it started with a research to transfer these colors into Korean painting.” The artist uses the soft, colour-changing properties of copper as paint. The thinly cut copper foil is also bonded to paper, and the way it changes over time is not much different from nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The corroded and faded metal flakes express the sense of life in nature. This sense of life includes change and death. The bright green leaves that emerge in spring after a long winter become similar in color<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to the corroded copper by autumn. The metal foil, which was shiny when it was released as a product, changes through painting and chemical bonding,\u2028and this process of change is also included in the message. The artist, who accepts the natural order of disappearance, prefers materials that naturally accept change. The physical perception of the passage of time is important in a theatre-like experience. According to “the Phenomenology of Perception”, it is through time that people think of existence. According to Merleau- Ponty, consciousness is simultaneous with all time.\u2028The moment I come into contact with time and become aware of its passage, time becomes not a line but a web of orientations. Such a phenomenological approach looks beyond the world captured by instrumentalist reason to the mystery. It goes further to say that mystery defines the world and reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phenomenology takes as its task ‘the revelation of the mysteries of the world and the mysteries of reason’ (Merleau-Ponty). It is ‘the same will to know the meaning of the world or of history in its embryonic state’ (Merleau-Ponty). The mystical experience in\u2028the presence of nature or art presupposes an active,\u2028not a passive, engagement of the senses. In “Foreign Bodies”, Alphonso Lingis points out that Merleau-Ponty understood the act of receiving sensory elements as seizing, capturing, and holding on to them: ‘Hardness and softness, roughness and smoothness, the moonlight and sunlight of memory are not the contents of the senses, but are given to us as forms of symbiosis that we welcome and as channels and means through which the outside world penetrates us’ (Merleau-Ponty). For Alphonso Lingis, the essence of the senses is their unique way of actively occupying space and time, of assembling and dispersing, of expanding and hollowing. A gesture, then, is the act of capturing a sense of an object. The sense of matter is also important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Jo has experimented with other metals such as<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stainless steel, aluminium, gold and silver, she says that copper naturally embeds itself in the paper, showing traces of change. Time softens the hard and hardens the soft. The mediumistic possibilities of Hanji, the basic material of Korean painting, are maximized. Paper is considered a living material. The artist says that paper becomes soft and tough when stimulated, and feels like leather when oiled. She finds in paper the feel of stone, iron, leather, and cloth. Paper and metal are sometimes colored by lightly applying fire. The thicker the paper, the brighter it looks, and the thinner the paper, the darker it looks. Compared to fabrics such as silk or cotton, paper is a kind of membrane, allowing for the changing nature and landscape beyond the painting. Some areas are thick with sketches, copper foil collage, and ink, while others are transparent with oil, allowing light to pass through and the fibers of the paper to stand out. The presence of multiple textures on one screen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is compared to the coexistence of multiple time zones in one space. Conversely, time can also unite different spaces through memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
